Sheikh Sidia Bayo

Human Rights Defender & Social Activist

A prominent Gambian political activist and former opposition leader known for his staunch resistance against the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh. Born in 1983, Bayo pursued his education in France, where he became an influential figure within the Gambian diaspora community. He founded the National Transitional Council of The Gambia (NTCG), an organization dedicated to democratic change and human rights advocacy in the Gambia.

Early Life & Education

Sheikh Sidia Bayo was born on August 21, 1979, in Paris. Growing up in France, he did very well in school and showed a strong dedication to learning. He studied Science and Technology at Lycee Guillaume Apollinaire of Thiais. Then, he went to Versailles University and graduated in 2003 with a first-class degree in Foreign Civilization and Languages

Stepping into the Arena of Change

Bayo’s academic success was just the beginning, strengthened by a passion for social justice and a strong sense of communication involvement and service. He founded the National Transitional Council of The Gambia (NTCG), which worked for democratic change and human rights in the Gambia.

Bayo also started the Caravan for Peace and Democracy, an organization focused on fighting poverty, improving health and education, and promoting environmental sustainability. His goal was simple: to build a better and fairer Gambia

A Diplomat with a Mission

Bayo's confidence and diplomatic acumen have garnered him global respect. During Yahya Jammeh's regime, he became a voice for the voiceless, advocating for change and justice. His efforts included engaging with key leaders and participating in pivotal UN meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2012, he collaborated with Antonio Guterres' team, David Martin (Scottish MP, EU), Cecile Kyenge (Italian MP, EU), and EU Ambassador H.E. Madam Susan Pavan Wolfe.

His dedication has been formally acknowledged. In September 2018, Bayo was awarded by the EU Parliament for his contributions to ending Jammeh's rule and promoting peace and democracy in the Gambia. Additionally, he received the International Consultant Award at the Global Investment Summit in 2022.

Business and Consultancy

Bayo's skills went beyond activism. He started successful businesses in France and provided consultancy and lobbying services to attract investors to the Gambia. His goal was to create opportunities and promote development in his homeland, showing that economic growth and social justice can work together.

Leading a New Generation

Sheikh Sidia Bayo’s journey is far from over. With the reelection of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, Bayo is leading a new generation committed to supporting the president's vision and mandate from 2021-2026. His efforts aim to build a Gambia that stands proud on the world stage, thriving in democracy and development.
